As a communication specialist I consult widely to commerce and industry on aspects of written, spoken and interpersonal communication. Corporate clients include Aurecon, GIBB, @Vantage, Old Mutual, Woolworths, Investec, KPMG, the Botswana National Productivity Centre, PriceWaterHouseCooper, Anglo Platinum and Hulett Aluminium.

Community / Government and NGO clients include Parliament, Cape Town City Council, Special Investigating Unit, Raymond Ackerman School of Entrepreneurship, Cape Chamber of Commerce, and the National Botanical Institute. A range of comments from course evaluations are listed.

As an educator, I have produced and co-authored several publications and training tools:

  • interactive E-Learning course (E-Learning Intro Powerpoint), CPD accredited, comprising written, presentation and managerial topics
  • presentation skills DVD SpeakEasy
  • textbook Professional Communication: Effective Written and Spoken Messages (4th Edition, Juta, 2017)

As a researcher my interest is professionalism, culture, ethics and gender in the workplace – women in construction workforce. Through a consulting programme on inter-cultural communication, I was asked by the International Labour Office (ILO) to address the Tripartite Meeting on the Construction Industry in the 21st Century, in Geneva. The ILO also commissioned me to research the state of the informal workforce in construction in the Western Cape. I have been interviewed on radio on numerous occasions.

 Past Positions held: 

Associate Professor and head of Professional Communication Studies, University of Cape Town where I gave courses in the faculties of Engineering and the Built Environment, Law, Commerce, Science, the Research Office and the Graduate School of Business.

Research Editor: Chamber of Mines’ Research Organisation, Johannesburg, and Company Editor for Southern Life and then Syfrets Trust, Cape Town. Prior to editing I worked as a speech and drama teacher (Springfield Convent and Sweet Valley).
